City Offers to Drop Record $105,000 Parking Fine to Just $2,500

A car that racked up $100,000 in parking tickets at an O'Hare parking lot sits behind the fence of the airport auto pound last fall.

In an unprecedented move, the City of Chicago has offered to drastically reduce the more than $100,000 in parking tickets issued to a single vehicle.

Yet despite the offer to drop the record amount of fines to under $2,500, the registered owner of the vehicle, Jennifer Fitzgerald, said she still can’t afford to pay.

Therefore, the city will continue to push its motion to dismiss a lawsuit filed against it by Fitzgerald, an unemployed single mother from the West Side, at a court hearing Wednesday afternoon.

“The city offered Ms. Fitzgerald a substantial reduction in the total amount owed, along with several options to pay over time that would have settled the matter,”  Chicago Law Department spokesman Roderick Drew said. “Unfortunately, all offers short of completely wiping away all debts, including prior unpaid tickets, were refused. Therefore, the city has no other alternative but to proceed with its motion to dismiss Ms. Fitzgerald’s lawsuit.”

Fitzgerald’s parking ticket nightmare began in November 2009, when she said a 1999 Chevy Monte Carlo car registered in her name was, unbeknown to her, abandoned by her ex-boyfriend and United Airlines employee Brandon Preveau at O’Hare Airport parking lot E.

It remained there for nearly 2½ years, racking up 678 parking tickets and $105,000 in fines until April of last year. City officials said they believe it’s the most-ticketed vehicle in Chicago history.

EXCLUSIVE: The Astounding Story Of How A Car Worth $600 Racked Up Over $100,000 In Chicago Parking Tickets

It might just be a world record.

At the very least one particular car has set a City of Chicago record for having been issued the most parking violations ever and having accumulated the most parking fines in the city’s history.

The city claims Jennifer Fitzgerald owes over $100,000 in parking tickets.

No, that’s not a typo or a few misplaced zeros on the end.

The amount is actually 105,761 dollars and 80 cents to be precise.

This is the total mind boggling debt the City of Chicago says the 31 year old, single mother of one, allegedly owes for parking violations on a single vehicle.

It’s a car she claims she didn’t own, drive or park where it racked up 678 bright orange parking tickets over a period of nearly three years according to Chicago’s Department of Finance.

Based on records from the DOF’s  list of the city’s top parking ticket scofflaws, the car in question seems to have set a record in Chicago for having received the highest number of parking tickets as well as accruing the largest fine amounts ever–beating Chicago’s #2 ranked parking ticket scofflaw by $65,000 and over 400 violations!

But now Fitzgerald is fighting back with a lawsuit against the city, her ex-boyfriend and United Airlines which was filed Friday, November 2nd in Cook County Circuit Court.
