Chicagoans seem to get some sort of enjoyment from complaining about the city’s many failings.
Whining and moaning about this problem, or that problem is like second nature to us. I am certainly guilty of it, perhaps, more than most.
But once in a great while, the “City That Works,” actually does.
In this particular case, a bunch of drivers who were erroneously towed from the Loyola Park parking lot got some justice.
As reported here back in early September, drivers had parked their cars in the lot for the night and came back in the morning to find their cars had disappeared.
It seems the city had not given drivers adequate notice that a film crew was shooting a TV commercial for Secret deodorant that evening. Subsequently, 27 drivers had their vehicles towed from the lot.
But almost as soon as the problem popped up, 49th Ward Alderman Joe Moore and his Chief of Staff Betsy Vandercook got to work.
According to Vandercook, over the course of the past five weeks, they were not only able to get the driver’s parking tickets non-suited (thrown out), but are getting the $160 tow fees each driver paid to retrieve their vehicle refunded without having to go through the painful tow hearing process.
“Everyone was a winner,” said Vandercook explaining that all of the many city departments she had to interact with, helped in resolving the issue. “They were really, really great. All the agencies involved were extremely helpful.”

It’s nice to hear a little good news, isn’t it? Kudos to Joe Moore and friends.

Were vehicles owners compensated for lost wages or equivalent? Who’s paying for the balance and alignment on the man-handled vehicles?
Everyone was not a “winner” . . . it wasn’t even a push.
I don’t live in his ward but fuck it, Joe Moore for mayor. He’s got to be one of the best alderman out there. Hey Shiller, eat shit and die!!!
Joe Moore had to coordinate with several city departments? Why do we have multiple city departments involved in a car towing?
Waste. No wonder why this city is broke.
I think its ironic the TV commercial was about a product aptly named “Secret”. How much notice does the city have to give for location shooting notice?
Joe Moore seems to be one of the most effective Alderman in Chicago. Its too bad that we don’t have an elected Mayor in Chicago.
