An explosion of bright orange “parking tickets” landed on the windshields of cars parked in the McKinley Park, Brighton Park and Little Village neighborhoods recently.
But, according to DNA Info, the tickets were not official city issued parking violations but campaign fliers from Pete Demay, a challenger to Ald. George Cardenas in the race for 12th ward alderman. The faux parking ticket challenged Cardenas on his support of the city’s red light and speed camera programs as well as on his vote to privatize city parking meters back in 2008.
“We thought that people should know George Cardenas’ history as it relates to voting for ordinances that hurt everyday working people,” DeMay told DNA Info.
Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s motorcade is at it again.
News website Crime in Wrigleyville and Boystown reports the mayor’s two car motorcade has been caught by red light cameras running the red five times since November.
While canvas is the medium of choice for most artists, Chicago artist Jim Bachor does some of his best work on potholes.
Bachor has achieved fame repairing potholes on the city’s crumbling streets using cement and colored mosaic tiles to create works of art perhaps more suitable for a gallery wall.
Illinois State Representative David McSweeney (R-Barrington Hills) introduced a bill in Springfield Thursday according to the Daily Herald.
McSweeney cited recent reporting by the Chicago Tribune which strongly questioned the effectiveness of red light cameras on reducing crashes and improving traffic safety.
“Red-light cameras primarily serve as a revenue enhancement tool at great cost to taxpayers,” McSweeney was quoted.
At Wednesday’s Chicago City Council meeting Ald. Anthony Beale (9th) and Ald. Tom Tunney (44th) introduced an ordinance that would put pedestrian countdown timers and increase the yellow light timing at every red light camera intersection according to the Sun-Times.
Beale, Chairman of the Transportation Committee, believes the countdown timers help drivers see how many seconds are left before the traffic light turns yellow allowing them to either stop or speed up to avoid a $100 red light ticket.
It’s been six years since the City of Chicago offered an amnesty program to induce scofflaws to cough up the cash for unpaid parking and red light camera tickets.
But now, in the midst of a heated mayoral campaign, 2nd Ward Alderman Bob Fioretti has proposed a ticket amnesty program that would allow drivers to pay the original fine amounts for unpaid parking tickets issued before April 15th, 2014 according to DNA Info.
Fioretti, who planned to introduce an ordinance at Wednesday’s city council meeting, believes the city could generate a lot of much needed revenue from a ticket amnesty.
“You can’t just go down the road eating a hamburger,” a police officer told a driver in Cobb County Georgia while issuing him a ticket under the state’s distracted driver law there.
The driver was scarfing down a quarter pounder with cheese from McDonald’s and was told by the officer he had observed him eating the burger while following him for two miles according to WSB-TV in Atlanta.
The officer wrote “eating while driving” in the comments section of the ticket.
Alredo Luna has to be Illinois’ worst driver.
The 62-year old Chicago man was pulled over and arrested for driving on a revoked license for the 22nd time last week.
That’s right, he’s been arrested 22 times for being caught driving on a revoked license.
So he wants to move it to Las Vegas.
That’s what lawyers for the former Chicago Department of Transportation official who initiated and oversaw the city’s red light camera program according to the Chicago Tribune.
Bills is accused of accepting hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash and gifts for allegedly making sure Redflex Traffic Systems won and retained the lucrative contract for the Chicago red light camera program.
In a court filing, Bills’ attorney Nishay Sanan wrote:
That’s what the Chicago Reader is reporting about an ill-conceived plan to keep so-called “day-trippers” from the suburbs from parking in the West Loop for free and then spending the day downtown.
The solution to the perceived problem was to restrict parking on neighborhood streets from 1:30 to 3:30 Monday through Friday.
It was a pilot program of sorts as it was initially only going to run from July 2013 to December 2013. But the signs didn’t come down in early 2014 and then the program got extended indefinitely by the City Council in May of last year.
