A Video History Of Wacker Drive

WCIU’s Me and You This Morning did a mini-documentary on the history of Wacker Drive the other day.

Interestingly, the upper and lower tier model was the brainstorm of visionary urban planner Daniel Burnham who was so amazingly influential in his vision for the future of the city.

Many a Hollywood production company has used Wacker Drive as a backdrop in films including the Blues Brothers and Batman.

Of course, Lower Wacker Drive is an amazing short cut for hardcore Chicago drivers to get between Lake Shore Drive and the entrance to the Eisenhower Expressway at Congress.

Visionaries like Daniel Burnham knew how efficient vehicle traffic flow was crucial for the health of a city. Burnham would be rolling over in in his grave to see Rahm Emanuel, Gabe Klein, and their paid stooges (the Active Transit Alliance and Streetsblog) working to turn beautiful boulevards and major streets into permanent vehicle gridlock.
