Critical Mass Chicago Friday Night

Critical Mass Chicago takes place tonight, the last Friday of the month.

The monthly parade of bikes steps off from Daley Center at 5:30 PM.

While normally hundreds if not a few thousand bikers participate in Critical Mass when the weather is kinder, gentler and warmer, one would expect this evening’s ride to be somewhat smaller.

A weeks worth of extra cold weather and a few inches of snow this morning will probably discourage only the most hardy and hardcore bike riders from participating.

The good news for drivers is the traffic impact from those crazy bikers will probably not be significant.

Drivers should keep an eye out for Critical Mass bikers all the same.

Happy Friday!

Icy bike lanes plus Critical Massholes equals dozens of douches headed for a nasty spill.

I am putting this up on a critical mass post to bring it to the top. The Bicycle community is REAL mad right now and I think that you are going to see some major blow-back over the summer. And with cause. A very popular cycle advocate (who stopped at lights and stop signs) was run down on Clybourn late last week. The driver, according to News Reports, was traveling at 50 MPH and had a BAC well over the limit.

    Released on a minimal $100,000 bond. That’s a posting of only $10,000.

    Hey David,

I was trying to get a post up on this over the weekend.

VERY sad story. Honestly, I don’t care if he was a bicycle advocate or even if he stopped at red lights. Doesn’t really matter to me. I’m more upset that someone, who was allegedly drunk, was driving recklessly and killed this person. Horrible!

    Totally sad story.

The bicycle community is up in arms over this and very very mad. I do not recall seeing them madder. The person who hit the cyclist had apparently been found to have run stop lights, had been arrested (although the charges had been dismissed) for having an open can of alcohol in the car, and purportedly ran a website called “AllYouCanDrink.com”. He was purportedly driving at 50 MPH and someone let him get in the car when he was, apparently, very drunk. Add to this what is being viewed as a “very small” amount of bail ($100,000 which is posting 10K) The bicycle community believes that this will simply be “swept” under the rug. And they are mad.
