Wacker Drive Project Two Weeks From Completion

Thursday is the beginning of the end of the two and a half year rehab project of both Upper and Lower Wacker Drive.

The Chicago Department of Transportation announced the intersection of Jackson Street and Upper Wacker Drive will reopen Thursday afternoon. Jackson has been closed between Canal and Franklin, while Upper Wacker has been closed between Adams and Jackson. Both streets will reopen to traffic at 2 PM according to CDOT.

The intersection has been closed since earlier in the year.

For the next two weeks, construction crews will be focused on completing the entire Revive Wacker Drive project by the end of this month.

“The reopening of the Jackson intersection is an important milestone in this final stage of the project,” said CDOT Commissioner Gabe Klein. “We expect to complete construction soon and open a modern, more efficient and safer Upper and Lower Wacker Drive.”

Downtown drivers will be elated that CDOT expect to reopen the intersection of Van Buren St. and Upper Wacker Drive, the Congress Parkway interchange, and the entire length of Upper and Lower Wacker Drive officially completing the project.

Finally, DOT says Franklin Street will be converted back to it’s original
northbound one-way street from Van Buren to Lake Street In the first week of December. The traffic flow was altered on Franklin to help alleviate traffic displaced by the Wacker construction.

The rebuilding of Wacker Drive has taken 5 YEARS to complete (the east-west leg during 2001 and 2002, and the north-south during 2010, 2011, and 2012). What an absolute disgrace. Another epic FAIL for CDOT.

No disgrace, the look and function has finally arrived. There is no fail CDOT.
