ABC 7 Sneak Previews New, Improved Wacker Drive

After two years and over $300 million of construction work on the Revive Wacker Drive project, both Lower and Upper Wacker Drive are scheduled to be completely open to traffic in December.

ABC 7 got a sneak preview of Lower Wacker to show off some of the project’s bells and whistles two months before completion.

Downtown drivers will be relieved when Lower Wacker re-opens as the southern portion of the roadway has been closed for the duration of the construction, although the upper portion has been only closed in sections.

Hardcore city drivers will especially be happy for Lower Wacker to finally open as it serves as a quick way to get from one end of downtown to the other as many drivers are intimidated by the dank, dark, dungeon like qualities of this underground roadway. The rat and homeless population discourages many from its use as well.

However, this construction face lift promises better lighting, more ventilation, less dirt and a generally more friendly driving experience.

Here’s ABC 7′s recent report, “Preview of new and improved Wacker Drive.”

How much of that 300 million went to city residents/city contractors that needed jobs?

How much was outsourced to companies that are from Indiana or Wisconsin or Michigan and drove in to take money out of this economy?

  2. B says:

100 years with proper maintenance and no cheating by contractors. So we’ll see significant work required in about 10 and total reconstruction in 30-50 years.
