Their kid has issues. Whether or not the parents are responsible for his actions as a young adult are hard to know. I'm guessing the fact their kid is now in prison for 9 years is going to take a toll on them. I would see this as a form of punishment. A terrible form of punishment. No decent parent wants their kid to grow up to be a mentally ill, drug using convict. If their kid got the red light tickets, the parents should not have to pay. They're going to suffer plenty with their kid locked up for all those years. To be fair, it looks like the parents ignored all the notices from the city on the red light tickets and should have contested the tickets in a timely manner--something the Trib story completely glossed over.
