NBC Talks Speed Camera Revenue With Geek At 5
How much revenue will the speed cameras generate for Chicago?
A lot. Millions and millions, at least according to the study The Expired Meter did a few months ago.
The estimate was all based on data from CDOT on the seven camera locations they monitored to justify moving forward to initiate the speed camera bill in Springfield.
The Geek talks to NBC 5′s Mary Ann Ahern on the 5 PM newscast about speed camera revenue and other ramifications of the new law.

UPDATE: If you’re really into the speed camera issue, here’s a few more media alerts.
Barnet Fagel, aka the Ticket Doctor is on with CBS 2′s Jay Levine at 6 and on WGN TV News at 6 and 9 PM.
In addition, Channel 11′s Chicago Tonight will discuss the issue at 7 PM.

Has a map of all “safety zones” been made available? I don’t care about meshing it up with existing cameras, I just want to know the areas and see the coverage of the city.
Ok. I got bored and figured out how to make the map myself.

Oops. Realized that the link I just submitted was only for the parks.
This one has both parks and schools. http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msa=0&msid=208718888081149251664.0004b859727779fdc1fcb
The reason I did this is because nothing in the language limits the enforcement to existing RLC. Mobile enforcement points could be setup anywhere within the indicated areas. The one question I have that isn’t addressed by this is if the school/park is just outside Chicago in a burb, can it have a safety zone within the city.
The one thing my map does not account for is the safety zone “extending to the furthest side of the next intersection” if any portion of a roadway is within a safety zone. Perhaps a project for tonight.
Q,
I don’t believe the city has figured out the issues you mentioned. I have a list of the safety zones if the Geek wants it. Mobile speed enforcement cameras are in the offing, but how many is not know yet for sure.
Q, your map is good, but would you plot the cameras according to what direction of traffic they are aimed at? Two or three approaches may not have a camera, but others have two and one intersection has three.
Logic would dictate that if a school is not within the city limits, the city has no standing to issue speeding citations, especially with a fixed speed detecting device. But then when has the city followed logic???
I haven’t looked at camera location, much less orientation. My maps were intended to only provide a general idea of how much of the city would fall within a safety zone. I’m looking to see if I can find a way to get the map to load more dynamically rather than in the random chunks google is presenting it currently.
