Is the Illinois Tollway’s brand new, nearly doubled rate increases punishing your wallet?

Both the Chicago Tribune and the Daily Herald offer insight into alternative travel routes to help drivers to save some money by avoiding the tollway.

In most cases, these routes extend travel times–often increasing driving times significantly.

One Herald reader explains while one alternative route saves him on tolls, the extra expense on gas and wear and tear on his vehicle aren’t worth it, so he’s stuck with paying the more expensive tolls.

The Illinois Tollway board voted this past summer to raise rates an average of 87% in order to fund $15 billion in tollway infrastructure improvements and road maintenance. The rate increases went into effect January 1st.

    Why the HELL is the tollway board, Metra board, CTA board, etc not elected? Not that electing these officials would guarantee no corruption or anything, but at least they would then have SOME accountability to the public. Right now, these agencies are all ruled by politically appointed cronies with no concern for serving the public at all.
