A joint enforcement effort between Secretary of State Police and Chicago Police put many police officers on the ground at five separate locations around downtown Chicago Thursday looking for abuse of disabled parking laws according to the NBC Chicago website.
A recent wave of publicity from a series of Chicago Sun-Times news reports on how drivers were abusing, stealing or counterfeiting disabled driver placards to park free at expensive metered spaces had driven the Chicago City Council to approve a measure dramatically increasing fines to up to $3000 per violation.
The new law goes into effect January 29, 2012.
