Blogger Makes Beating Parking Tickets Look Easy

Steve Tanner dislikes parking tickets just as much as the rest of us.

But Mr. Tanner, after getting two tickets in February for not displaying a Chicago city sticker, decided to do something about it and fight back.

Unfortunately, Tanner’s sticker was one of the tens of thousands of city stickers sold last year without enough adhesive to remain affixed to his windshield.

The cold weather of the Blizzard of 2011 ultimately took its toll and Tanner’s sticker wound up on the floor of his car and thus, replaced by two orange tickets on his windshield.

Tanner does an amazing job of documenting how the entire process of his journey from violation to building a case to ultimately having both tickets dismissed at his hearing on his blog, SteveandAmySly.com.

Anyone who wants to learn the fundamentals of successfully contesting a parking ticket should take a few minutes and read over Tanner’s full account, “Parking Ticket Battle: Steve 2, City of Chicago 0.”

No problem Steve, but I couldn’t ignore what a fab post it was.

Our mutual friend Mark tipped me off to your post and honestly, your post is a great case study on how to fight a ticket. Your use of photos and documentation is fabulous.

I hope readers here can learn from your post so they can fight their own tickets successfully.

    Thanks again.

Hi guys, I live in Melbourne Australia, but I feel our parking situations are pretty similiar. Firstly, well done Steve Tanner!

I have an idea I would like to share with you. I recently learnt that most councils outsource parking fine administering to private companies. I understand the outsourcing from an efficiency point of view, but shouldn’t all this money go back to the community? I propose that NFP organisations should take over this service to ensure as much as possible is invested back into local projects and social causes. Further, if the NFP had Deductable Gift Recipient status then a portion of the fine would be tax deductable as it would be considered a donation- win/win. Also, it would take a little of the sting out of getting a fine and perhaps the parking officers wouldn’t cop so much hatred doing a tough job that someone has to do.

    What do you think?

    Cheers

    Pete

Australia is more progressive with their councils than the US and most definitely Chicago
